GURU MANTRA
Sanskrit:
गुरुर्ब्रह्मा गुरुर्विष्णुः गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरः ।
गुरुः साक्षात् परं ब्रह्म तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः ॥
English:
Gurur Brahmā Gurur Vishṇuḥ Gurur Devo Maheśvaraḥ,
Guruḥ Sākṣāt Paraṃ Brahma Tasmai Śrī Gurave Namaḥ.
Meaning:
The Guru is Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver), and Maheshwara (the destroyer).The Guru is the Supreme Being, the absolute God.; I bow to that revered Guru.
GAYATRI MANTRA
Sanskrit:
ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः ।
तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं ।
भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि ।
धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥
English:
Om Bhūr Bhuvaḥ Svaḥ,
Tat Savitur Vareṇyaṃ,
Bhargo Devasya Dhīmahi,
Dhiyo Yo Naḥ Prachodayāt.
Meaning:
We meditate upon that Supreme Being — the embodiment of life, the remover of sorrow, the source of happiness, the supreme, the radiant, the destroyer of sins, and divine in nature.
Almighty God may illuminate our intellect, which may lead us on the righteous path.
YOGA PRAYER
Sanskrit:
योगेन चित्तस्य पदेन वाचां ।
मलं शरीरस्य च वैद्यकेन ।
योऽपाकरोत्तं प्रवरं मुनीनां ।
पतञ्जलिं प्राञ्जलिरानतोऽस्मि ॥
English:
Yogena chittasya padena vāchām,
Malam sharīrasya cha vaidyakena,
Yo’pākarottam pravaram munīnām,
Patañjalim prāñjalirānato’smi.
Meaning:
I bow with folded hands to Sage Patanjali,
Who purified the mind through Yoga,
Speech through Grammar,
And the body through Ayurveda.
UNIVERSAL PRAYER
Sanskrit:
ॐ सर्वे भवन्तु सुखिनः ।
सर्वे सन्तु निरामयाः ।
सर्वे भद्राणि पश्यन्तु ।
मा कश्चिद्दुःखभाग्भवेत् ॥
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥
English:
Om Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah,
Sarve Santu Nirāmayāḥ,
Sarve Bhadrāṇi Paśyantu,
Mā Kaścid Duḥkhabhāgbhavet,
Om Shāntiḥ Shāntiḥ Shāntiḥ.
Meaning:
May all be happy,
May all be free from illness,
May all see goodness and auspiciousness,
May none suffer or be in sorrow.

तमसो मा ज्योतिर्गमय ।

Om Asato Mā Sadgamaya,
Tamaso Mā Jyotirgamaya,
Mṛtyor Mā Amṛtaṃ Gamaya,

Meaning:
Lead me from the unreal to the real,
From darkness to light,
From mortality to immortality.

SHANTI PRAYER II
Sanskrit:
ॐ सह नाववतु ।
सह नौ भुनक्तु ।
सहवीर्यं करवावहै ।
तेजस्विनावधीतमस्तु मा विद्विषावहै ॥

English:
Om Saha Nāvavatu,
Saha Nau Bhunaktu,
Saha Vīryaṃ Karavāvahai,
Tejasvināvadhītamastu Mā Vidviṣāvahai,
Om Shāntiḥ Shāntiḥ Shāntiḥ.
Meaning:
May we be protected together,
May we be nourished together,
May we work together with great energy,
May our study be enlightening,
May we not hate or dispute with each other.

ASHTANGA YOGA OPENING PRAYER
Sanskrit:
वन्दे गुरूणां चरणारविन्दे ।
सन्दर्शित स्वात्म सुखाव बोधे ।
निःश्रेयसे जाङ्गलिकायमाने ।
संसार हालाहल मोहशान्त्यै ॥
आबाहु पुरुषाकारं ।
शङ्खचक्रासि धारिणम् ।
सहस्रशिरसं श्वेतं ।
प्रणमामि पतञ्जलिम् ॥

Sandarśita Svātma Sukhāvabodhe,

Meaning:
I bow to the lotus feet of the Gurus,
Who awaken insight into the happiness of one’s own Self,
Who act like the jungle physician,
Dispelling the delusion and poison of conditioned existence.
To Patanjali, an incarnation of Adisesha,
White in color, with a thousand radiant heads,
Holding a conch, discus, and sword —
I offer my salutations.
ASHTANGA YOGA CLOSING PRAYER
Sanskrit:
स्वस्ति प्रजाभ्यः परिपालयन्तां ।
न्यायेन मार्गेण महीं महीशाः ।
गोब्राह्मणेभ्यः शुभमस्तु नित्यं ।
लोकाः समस्ताः सुखिनो भवन्तु ॥

Svasti Prajābhyaḥ Paripālayantām,
Nyāyena Mārgēṇa Mahīṁ Mahīśāḥ,
Go Brāhmaṇēbhyaḥ Śubhamastu Nityaṁ,
Lokāḥ Samastāḥ Sukhino Bhavantu.

Meaning:
May all beings everywhere be happy and free.
May the rulers of the earth protect the world with justice and righteousness.
May there be well-being for the cows, the Brahmins (spiritual seekers), and all beings.
May peace and happiness prevail in all worlds.
